Hole Saw

A metal hole saw, as its name implies, is used to cut a clean, neat and circular hole through just about any material.  These saws are easy to use and generally do a clean job.

However, it should be noted that metal hole saws don’t operate on their own.  They’ll need a companion hand drill to offer the spinning power necessary to create a hole.

Here’s a further explanation regarding the logic behind this.  A regular hole saw is designed to cut large holes in materials by using cylindrical blades, and it’s not attached to a drill.  A standard metal cutting hole saw, though, is not equipped to cut through just any kind of surface material.

By using an arbor, a handheld drill can be attached to a hole saw for metal. In the center, this attachment has a drill bit that helps to keep the hole saw in place and prevents the saw from wobbling while it cuts.  As far as placement of the metal hole saw drill bit goes, you’ll want to put it where you want the center of the hole you’re drilling to be.  After applying some slight pressure, the drill will be activated, allowing your bi metal hole saw to cut through the surface.

A metal hole saw has cutting teeth on one of its edges. The hole saw for cutting metal also has a drill bit that’s made of the same material.  You’ll want to pay attention to the material and specs of the drill bits that come included with your metal hole saw.  For example, there are plastic and acrylic drill bits that could be right for your situation, though they can’t have much pressure applied or they risk breaking.

You’ll want to make sure that the hole saw drill bit spins quickly.  The general rule is that the faster it spins, the more power it should generate and the more easily it can cut tough surfaces.

Let’s look at a few quick safety tips to keep in mind when using metal hole saws.

When you use a metal hole saw on any material, you should wear safety glasses since metal scraps can easily fly up from the drill bit area while you’re cutting.  Make sure that you hold the item you’re cutting tightly to a stationary surface.  If it moves during cutting, you could accidentally hurt yourself.  For extra support, you can always place a piece of scrap wood behind the object being cut.

There are different uses of hole saws for cutting metal.  One such use is to install door hardware like entry sets and deadbolts. You’ll need to know the diameter of the hole that needs to be drilled, and this should impact the size of the metal hole saw that you end up using.  The blade size may be measured in inches, and some of the more common ones include the 2 metal hole saw and the 3 metal hole saw.

Other uses for a metal hole saw may be to install a light switch or receptacle, or even to drill the hole in something like a birdhouse!
